In this week’s Field Notes Friday, I continue the conversation about self-trust and agency by reflecting more on the internal push-pull so many AuDHDers experience.

I look at how the differing needs of autism and ADHD can create internal tension—especially around things like routine, attention, stimulation, and social energy.

One of the central metaphors I explore comes from my childhood experience of swimming pools (I’ll share a longer essay on this later this weekend). It’s through that metaphor that I introduce the idea of Defensive Monotropic Mode — those times when deep focus becomes less about interest and more about escaping the overwhelm of life …
